Les Miserables – Victor Hugo

T
he size of this book may put some people off, but Penguin Classics do an excellent abridged version in which the reader loses none of the impact of the story.

Jean Valjean is a prisoner sentenced to 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread, who upon his release, is a far different man than he was. Now hard and bitter, shunned and feared by all, he is utterly transformed through a simple encounter with a Bishop who demonstrates to him the love of God.

This story is a powerful affirmation of the power of God’s love to break down and transform the most amazingly hard individuals, and one of the best books I have ever read.
