The Walking Group is open to all age groups. Walks for pleasure, as well as exercise, are arranged for the last Saturday of the month and are announced in church.
There is always great fun, good fellowship, sometimes picnics and sometimes lunches are booked ahead.
Please come along and share in these good times together.
Molly Malcolm, West Church’s very own fitness fanatic, is restarting the “West Walkers” group, to which all ladies aged 60 or more are warmly invited. Molly has been running fitness groups for older folk for many years, including a group in West Church for those aged 60+. Already convinced of the benefits herself, Molly recently came across a new study into the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for older people. Researchers at the National Institute of Ageing in Maryland, USA are reported to have found that regular walks can help pensioners stave off Alzheimer’s disease. Those who exercised at least three times a week for at least 15 minutes at a time were 32 per cent less likely to develop the condition – a finding supported by British charity the Alzheimer’s Society, who say that a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, is an important factor in staving off the disease.
“With this in mind, I have decided to restart West Walkers,” says Molly. “We will meet at West Church and walk for about an hour and a half. The walk won’t be too taxing – just some gentle, healthy exercise in the company of old and new friends.” Anyone coming along should wear a pair of suitable shoes (“No open toed sandals”, says Molly!) and bring a light coat."
